October Surprise

It’s been a busy few weeks since we last graced you with our comings and goings. To catch you up…

Our gig kicking off the Morris Cup on October 13th was an absolute blast. The hour was early, but the crowd was thick and our hosts from the Jason Morris Judo Center were incredibly kind and gracious.  Click here to see some great photos from the show, courtesy of Lou DiGesare. Many thank yous go out to Coach Jason Morris & everyone at JMJC for having us participate in the day’s festivities.

We’re still holding it down at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs every Wednesday night with our weekly residency and Open Mic. It’s hard to believe we’ve been hosting there for over a year now. It’s gone from a slow burn to a raging fire of musical talent over the last 12+ months. Why don’t you stop by this week?

Johnny has been stumping around doing some solo acoustic appearances. You can catch him this tonight at Justin’s on Lark in Albany during Tuesday Night Live, and then on Friday, November 8th in Schenectady at the SOD Fall Jam happening at theVan Dyck Lounge. Finally, we’re stopping by 91.1 FM WSPN at Skidmore College to play some acoustic cuts (and maybe previewing some songs off the forthcoming new album?) on Saturday, November 2nd. The show starts at midnight, so set those radio dials OR stream the show online.

Also, don’t forget about our big gig on Sunday, November 17th at Valentine’s right here in Albany. This is shaping up to be our final big gig of 2013 before we head into the studio to commence recording our first full-length album (with an eye on an early-2014 release). It’s also the time for a big birthday celebration, this one for Erin’s 25th! We’re also really stoked to have our good friends Beautiful Disaster and our West Virginia peeps Time & Distance on the bill with us for that night, too. It’s going to be one hell of a gig, so be there.

Don’t forget to follow us on FacebookTwitter Instagram! And, as always, stay tuned for even more new album updates. There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff happening right now that will eventually float to the surface. Until then you’ll just have to wait it out!

PS: this past weekend we celebrating our very own Ryan Klaeysen’s birthday. The baby of the band is all-grown up, with an old-timey mustache, blazer adorned with a novelty pin and his head topped with a kids birthday hat. Happy Birthday, dude.

Just Be Love

There is a ton of stuff working its way down the pipe. So in order to not spoil any of the surprises we’re going to keep it brief this time around.

This Sunday is our gig during the Morris Cup on October 13th at the Burnt Hills High School, presented by the Jason Morris Judo Center. This really is a distinct honor and privilege for us to kick off the tournament this weekend. The judo community has been really supportive of us so we’re quite happy to return the love. We’ll also have a few tricks up our sleeve, but you’ll just have to be there to see them in action. Unfortunately, it’s all happening at the very un-rock n’ roll hour of 9AM. Most days we’re just getting to bed around that time, but we’ll soldier on in true Hard Soul fashion.

Work is still continuing on our first (as yet to be titled) full-length album. You know, rehearsals, last minute chord tweaking and all that. But these songs are good. Like, really good. We wouldn’t say it if we didn’t mean it. So stew in that thought for a little while longer as we ready this nimble giant of a record for your auditory consumption.

For those who don’t know: the legendary Valentine’s Music Hall and Beer Joint, a stop-off for pretty much every band swinging through the Albany-area over the last 2+ decades, is closing their doors within the next few months. So before the locks click one more time we wanted to bring a most righteous rock n’ roll show through. So mark Sunday, November 17th on your calendar and clear your schedules. It’ll be a special occasion for a number of reasons: 1) it’s Erin’s birthday! And 2) we’ll be sharing the stage with our West Virginia compatriots Time & Distance [for the third time this year]. This will likely be our last-EVER show at Valentine’s before it’s closed forever, so seriously don’t miss this gig.

Until next week, remember: just be love.

We Don’t Want to Break Your Heart

We’re still shaking the sleep from our eyes and grasping for a bottle of water & aspirin as we reflect on last night’s sort-of impromptu acoustic set at Justin’s on Lark during their weekly Tuesday Night Live series. We cannot thank everyone who decided to spend their Tuesday evening with us while we dropped some acoustic magic on the masses. Also have to give a big shout-out to Carl Daniels for hosting and inviting us out. We’ve already got big plans in the making for our next TNL appearance, so if you missed last night then make sure you don’t miss the next session!

Apologies to all waiting for the latest episode in our #SeizeTheTour web-series. We had some technical difficulties over the weekend which has held up the finalizing of our latest clip from the Akron, OH stop of our 2013 summer tour. Have no fear, though. Next Tuesday we’ll return with the continuing adventures of Hard Soul, so subscribe now and get it delivered directly to your inbox as soon as it goes live!

We’re one week closer to our gig at the Morris Cup XII on October 13th at the Jason Morris Judo Center in Glenville, NY. This will probably be the first time we’ve played to a crowd consisting entirely of people who could beat us up. What they don’t know is the most fragile part of the body is the heart, so we’ll be taking aim and opening fire. But be wary; our aim is true.

Pen to Paper

Hey y’all. Just a quick update from all of us here on what’s been happening over the last few weeks.

Work is still chugging along on the new album. The music is flowing from the strings and the keys, and the words are falling out of the pen onto paper like water over the lip of the waterfall. It’s difficult to encapsulate exactly how we feel about these songs and how they move us individually  and collectively as a band, but they have that sort of undeniable groove that penetrates your consciousness. It starts as a head nodding along to the beat, then slowly start tapping your feet, and eventually full on body movement. They grab your attention from the very first note and holds it until the last chord fades away into the air, leaving your ears ringing and your head thinking. In short: they’re really really good. A studio recording date hasn’t been chosen yet, but as soon as it is we’ll be sure to let you know!

On the live front, we’re still holding it down every Wednesday night at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs and now every Tuesday at The Albany Rail Yard in Albany pulling double duty hosting open mics. These weekly residencies have been a great way to road-test some of the new material in front of some new ears and gives us a better idea of what songs might need some more tweaking versus the ones that blow the doors off the place. So far it’s been more of the latter, which is very cool. We’ve also met some fantastic local bands and musicians who have absolutely blown us away. Plus there is plenty of band stupidity that you can experience with us.

For those out there keeping count, we released episodes 5 & 6 in our #SeizeTheTour web-series, chronicling both the Boston and Philadelphia stops of the tour. Both gigs were absolutely killer; the crowds were amazing and we met two awesome bands, Tape Off the Radio and Breckenwood, who we’ll hopefully be sharing the stage with again really soon.

So watch us scarf some giant pizza, cross your fingers that Johnny doesn’t puke, and then ready yourself for next Tuesday when episode 7 drops as we roared into West Virginia for the final leg of the tour!
